Speeding Up IE If No Proxy Server is Installed

If you don't have a proxy server on your computer, you can speed up how long Internet Explorer takes to load.

Go to Tools / Internet Options

Click on the Connections tab

Click on the LAN Settings button

Uncheck Automatically detect settings

Restoring the Default Window Size in Internet Explorer.

If the default size of Internet Explorer is not what you want, Start Regedit Go to H_Key_Current_User / Software / Microsoft / Internet Explorer / Main Delete or rename the key Window_Placement Restart IE

Seeing When a Web Page Was Last Updated

You can easily determine when a web page was last updated.

Open up the page you want.

Enter javascript:alert(document.lastModified) in the Address bar

Note: You only need a java capable browser

To use this without all the typing each time:

Open C:\Windows\Favorites folder in Explorer

Copy (you must copy, NOT make a new shortcut) any existing shortcut in that folder.

Paste it back to the same (C:\windows\favorites) directory

Right click it, click properties, in the URL: box put in your tip javascript:alert(document.lastModified) Then rename it, I named it Date Info.

That's it, it's always there in Favorites when you want it.

Opening Links in a New Window

Hold down Shift and point with the mouse on a link. A new IE opens automatically with the new page.

Windows 98 Tips & Tricks...

Stop "Roll-Out" Animation:

It's not a big deal for many people, but Windows 98's default way of sliding out menus and windows gradually distracts some people. To make menus pop out, as they do under Windows 95, open Control Panel and double-click on the Display item. Click on the Effects tab and under Visual Effects, click to remove the checkmark next to Animate windows, menus, and lists. If you change your mind later, you can return here and click a checkmark back into the box.

Stop Automatic Dialing:

To stop your browser - or any other Internet aware application - from automatically dialing up your ISP:

Click Start and select Programs > Settings > Control Panel
Open Internet Options
Select the Connections tab
Check Never dial a connection
Also click Start and select Programs > Accessoires > Communications > Dial-Up Networking
From the Connections menu, choose Settings... and check prompt to use Dial-Up Networking.

No More Warning Message:

Opening the Windows folder will raise this warning: "To view the contents of this folder, click Show Files." If you're tired of being warned left and right, if you think you can do without the alerts, turn them off by turning off the customization.

  1. Open the Windows folder.
  2. Copy the FOLDER.HTT and DESKTOP.INI files, giving the copies other names.
  3. Open View, Customize This Folder, Remove Customization.
  4. Click Next, Next, and Finish.
  5. Make the same changes to the Windows/System folder.

How To Disable The CD-ROM Autorun Feature:

When a Windows 95/98 aware CD-ROM is inserted into a CD-ROM drive, Windows 98 automatically launches the program contained on the disk, whether you want it to or not. Similarly the audio CD player pops up whenever you insert an audio CD and starts playing it immediately. This is cute the first or second time, but soon gets to be a hassle. What's even worse, is that if you double-click on the your CD icon in My Computer, the autorun fires up, instead of a folder window as you'd expect. This is especially irritating on slower computers, where you have to wait for what seems like an eternity for it to load some ridiculous welcome screen. The ability to turn this "feature" off is not really something you find easily, but it can be done by following the instructions below.
